Adventures With LT Magnotto: Cherokee High School
1 Comment · Posted by Jakprints in Fun Stuff, Techniques
Jakprints’ own LT Magnotto pretty much bleeds ink. (And from the photo, it appears his inky-blood also comes neatly, pre-separated in CMYK blobs.) Which is quite fitting, because LT is the lead separator for all apparel printing at Jakprints. His latest challenge came from the marching band of Cherokee High School in New Jersey.
Their artwork consisted of some very colorful, yet photo realistic elements, which required a more creative approach when making separations. The garments ordered for the job were Alstyle 1301 crew neck t-shirts in Dark Chocolate. Being a dark shirt, LT knew there would need to be a white base to make the color pop, but he also wanted to make sure the dark areas retained some depth.
His solution was to selectively apply a white base to only the areas that needed it. For darker areas, he would fade the white base out to reveal the natural fabric of the chocolate shirt. The tricky part, and the true art of it, is making the transition between the two undetectable.

In this detail: Areas of the face have a white base with colored inks printed on top, while areas of the hair are simply ink printed on top of the shirt itself.

Inks used on this shirt:
1 of 10 – white base (selectively applied)
2 of 10 – Pantone Cool Gray 8 C
3 of 10 – Pantone 186 C
4 of 10 – Pantone Yellow C
5 of 10 – Pantone 259 C
6 of 10 – Pantone 293 C
7 of 10 – Pantone Rhodamine Red C
8 of 10 – Pantone 306 C
9 of 10 – Pantone 319 C
10 of 10 – white ink

That is amazing. Artistry thru technology made possible by knowledge and experience. How much did that cost the marching band?
