Jakprints’ own LT Magnotto pretty much bleeds ink. (And from the photo, it appears his inky-blood also comes neatly, pre-separated in CMYK blobs.) Which is quite fitting, because LT is the lead separator for all apparel printing at Jakprints. His latest challenge came from the marching band of Cherokee High School in New Jersey.
Their artwork consisted of some very colorful, yet photo realistic elements, which required a more creative approach when making separations. The garments ordered for the job were Alstyle 1301 crew neck t-shirts in Dark Chocolate. Being a dark shirt, LT knew there would need to be a white base to make the color pop, but he also wanted to make sure the dark areas retained some depth.
His solution was to selectively apply a white base to only the areas that needed it. For darker areas, he would fade the white base out to reveal the natural fabric of the chocolate shirt. The tricky part, and the true art of it, is making the transition between the two undetectable.
In this detail: Areas of the face have a white base with colored inks printed on top, while areas of the hair are simply ink printed on top of the shirt itself.
Inks used on this shirt: 1 of 10 – white base (selectively applied) 2 of 10 – Pantone Cool Gray 8 C 3 of 10 – Pantone 186 C 4 of 10 – Pantone Yellow C 5 of 10 – Pantone 259 C 6 of 10 – Pantone 293 C 7 of 10 – Pantone Rhodamine Red C 8 of 10 – Pantone 306 C 9 of 10 – Pantone 319 C 10 of 10 – white ink

How does Rockett Clothing create such captivating, colorful designs for their clothing line? Apparently, since 2003, they have secluded themselves within a bunker in Redlands, California, where they watch a constant loop of 1980s movies such as “Rollerblade” and “Hell Comes To Frogtown“. After repeated viewings, I’m told that the inspiration flows like unstoppable, red-hot magma.
This featured shirt is part of Rockett Clothing’s upcoming new line, and was printed in 7 colors using soft inks. Hybrid soft inks work best on dark garments, because the color stays bright and vivid, while the printed areas remain soft to the touch. This design makes use of our oversized print area, with dimensions at 20×28 inches, the ink continues right off the collar. Here’s a breakdown of the colors used:
1 of 7 – soft ink white base 2 of 7 – Pantone 485 3 of 7 – Pantone 395 4 of 7 – Pantone 288 5 of 7 – Pantone 311 6 of 7 – Pantone Purple 7 of 7 – Pantone 360

We recently had the pleasure of working with Kerstin Strom, a self-driven professional industrial designer who is forging a career through sustainable design solutions. She was in need of new business cards, and was looking for something unique and earth-friendly.
We printed her design with soy & vegetable based ink onto our FSC certified 100% recycled 13pt uncoated stock. The uncoated stock compliments the added green foil stamp, making the design really shine. The finishing touch is that Kerstin took advantage of our August special for free rounded corners, and completes her card with 1/4″ radius corners.
Check us out if you’re looking to get a business card printed, and don’t forget about our free upgrades listed on our homepage at Jakprints.com!
Often described as gritty, inventive and startling, the work of designer Art Chantry is always eye catching. His early design work for subculture posters and album covers for Nirvana, Hole and The Sonics, has lead to him being pursued by corporations such as Nike, Microsoft and Coca-Cola. Chantry will be speaking in Cleveland, Ohio presented by the Cleveland AIGA on September 24th 2009.
The AIGA is promoting their special event with a folded self-mailing poster and entrusted Jakprints to deliver a top notch product. These vibrant 18×24 posters ran 2/2 with soy & vegetable based black ink and PMS 812. They are printed on our in-house 100# uncoated stock, which is FSC certified and 30% PCW recycled. At Jakprints, we are happy to be working with organizations like the AIGA, who are making FSC certification and earth-friendly alternatives a priority.
