If you have a relationship with us already, you’re most likely familiar with our history, culture and character. You know that one of our main values is leaving the Earth better than we found it by balancing our consumption through recycling and planting one tree with every order. We have taken those values to higher altitudes and are beyond ecstatic to announce that Jakprints is powered by 100% Wind Energy!
“Say Whaaat” and “How” you ask? Nowadays anyone can do it, even residential homes. We do it and we don’t even have a wind turbine on our grounds! It’s made possible through RECs, which stand for Renewable Energy Credits. A renewable energy credit (REC) is created for each megawatt-hour (1 MWh, or 1000 kilowatt-hours) of renewable electricity generated and delivered to the power grid.
For the majority of us who use electricity (unless you’re living off-the-grid, but with internet ;-D) we are supplied through the grid. The power lines you see hanging from telephone poles down every street is how your energy provider distributes electricity to you.
Purchasing renewable energy shifts the demand that depletes our natural resources, by increasing the demand to utilize those resources responsibly. Renewable energy generated by wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, and hydropower sources not only create electricity, it also creates environmental benefits by cutting back on the burning of fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. Every REC is tracked and accounted for, which is how the environmental attributes are measured.
Instead of buying the cheapest electricity, we choose a supplier and pay a little more for each MWh used at the rate for 100% Wind Energy. Even though the green energy may not be coming directly to our building, it is being generated and distributed elsewhere. Essentially, when purchasing RECs, we’re investing in a pool that increases the demand for renewable energy. You can make the same choice to balance your energy consumption by purchasing RECs and supporting green energy development.
